But upon thinking back to a book I had read, I usually can imagine the color and feel of the pages as well as the smell.
I do the same. Although not as consistently as the place thing. I will remember the smell if it is out of the ordinary. And it is more often in reverse: I will smell something and it will make me think of the book.
For example long ago I read Redwall. It smelled like...Okay I have no idea how to describe it but I remember it. Take my word for it. There was a rip on the cover from the bottom right corner across to the center of the book, as reading I would always stick my middle finger in it. The pages were a booky yellow and had a grainy feel. Good times...
But if you asked me what happened in Redwall, I would give a vague summary at best.
