2. Read a book by an author from a country you've not read a book from before.

Here I am a little stumped.

I think perhaps I haven't read anyone from Iran? Or really most of the Arab world. Any suggestions?

We have Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, if you want to borrow that.

I have been planning to read that, too.
First I have to make sure I haven't read anything from Iran, though. Do we consider Gilgamesh Iran?

Or you could try something by Ahdaf Soueif, who is Egyptian. The Map of Love is gorgeous.

3. Read one Scifi, one Fantasy and one Spec Fic book (i.e. three separate books, and they can be books you've read before, if you like).

What distinguishes Spec Fic from Fantasy and Sci Fi? As I understand the term it is merely one that is wider, and encompasses the other two in addition to other stuff.

What Larry said.

- Mystery

Do you mean crime? I wonder whether this is the time to finally pick up a Val McDermid book, but I am not sure it would fit the bill (never having read one before).

There is definitely some overlap here, so as long as the killer isn't obvious I'm sure we can include Crime in Mystery.

If it doesn't, perhaps I'll finally read the book where Poirot dies.

- Family chronicle

Here, again, I am having trouble thinking of a good one.

Barbara Kingsolver? I guess there's the Forsyte Saga as well.

You could just google it. :P

Googling may provide titles, but rarely quality assessment that I can trust. I don't want to waste my time reading shit.
