1) in my opinion, and that of several others, Night Watch is one of TP's best books. Yet it is at the end of an arc as it were, and the finer points of Character development and a lot of other pointed the book tries to address relies on having read at least some of the earlier books. Have you read any books part way through a series? ( a proper series like WoT or a kind-of series like Discworld?)

I don't think I've read any of them in sequence. I started out with the early ones, but I got fed up with them (I was very young at the time and made the extraordinary mistake of reading them in translation), so I may have gotten a basic introduction to Witches and Wizards, but apart from that I have not followed the sequence. I agree that Night Watch makes much more sense and is much better if you know Vimes and the Watch story well. This is why I never recommend it as a first book to people who want to start reading Pratchett.

2) do you think it affected the quality of your read for better or worse or not at all?

Hmm. I accidentally answered this, I think. Although in general I don't think it has affected my read much. I am good at retaining fictional information, so I get the pleasure out of books I've read later if I've missed things the first time around.

3) I personally think that TP's characterisation, due to the long length of the book arcs, occurs quite strongly but more slowly and subtly across the series. Do you agree? Is this good or bad or neutral? Basically this is a "read my rather silly statement: discuss" question

I agree. Particularly Vimes, Granny and Vetinari, but probably a few others as well.
