This is like the guy who had 6 months to complete a thesis, but he puts it off until the last week, and then he gets sick on the day before the due date and uses that as an excuse as to why the thesis is going to be late.
Bottomline: Finish the book in 2, 3, 4, or even 5 years and you wouldn't have to be making excuses in year 6 as to why it is going to be even LATER than it already is.
Martin must be the slackest personality I've ever encountered.
The weird part is how he is constantly wrapping up anthologies, revised editions of his earlier works, Wild Card stories and other stuff, but can't be bothered to finish up the next book in the only series that ever made him even remotely famous.
No one heard about this dude until ASOIAF, and now he is trying to cash in on it by using his newfound fame to flog more of his older, unknown work.
Unsavory character in my view.

Martin finds further way to put off writing the book.

People still care about Martin and anticipate a book that will clearly never be published?

Yeah, I have to say I'm with Adam on this one, it's rather easy to complain from the sidelines.

Has Vegas started taking odds on whether the book will be finished within 2011 yet? *NM*
