Just finished reading I Shall Wear Midnight, and I will post a review in the next couple of days as I can't see that anybody else has. But first, I wanted to ask a few questions about what you think of Sir Terry.
1) have you read any Terry Pratchett?
I wrote my master's thesis on him
2) if so was it Discworld or something else or both? How many books?
Discworld. Most of them? There are a few I still haven't read. I am reading The Truth right now.
3) what is your overall opinion of Pratchett's writing?
I love it. He is delicious. Sometimes, in some books, he gets a little predictable or repetitive -- Tiffany Aching is never quite as good as the rest, for example; and I never warmed to Mort.
4) which are your favourite arc of books by TP? (e.g Tiffany Aching, Vimes, Strata, the truckers etc.)
I love the Watch books, the Witches are lovely, and usually the Wizards. I am not fan of Tiffany Aching, thought it got better in the last one, and I do appreciate the Nac Mac Feegle. I have yet to read Strata, Truckers or the rest.
5) have you noticed a change in his style or quality since his diagnosis with Alzheimers?
Mmno, not really. None of his later books have been among my favourites, but they are on par with or better than some earlier ones, I think.
6) do you think it is right for an author to be knighted on the basis of fiction he has written?
Naturally. Why not?
7) what is your favourite individual Pratchett book?
I find it hard to compare the best ones. I do love Witches Abroad, Wyrd Sisters, Carpe Juggulum, Guards! Guards!, Jingo, Thief of Time, Night Watch (possibly my favourite if I am pressed), Hogfather, Reaper Man and The Fifth Elephant. You'll notice Witches and Watch dominate the list. But I will love anything including Vetinari, Granny, Lu Tze or Death (as a major character, although even when tangential he is lovely).
do you also think this is his best work?Hmm. Yes
9) do you ever find that you don't think of your favourite book by an author etc as the best one? Why is this (not) so?
Sometimes. Although it is more often the case that my favourite author is not the one I deem to be the best objectively. The distinction more rarely shows up internally.
10) have you read I Shall Wear Midnight? What did you think?
I liked it better than the other Tiffany Aching books, possibly because she was older here. I also liked the return of the earlier character (I am being cryptic to avoid spoilers).
11)do you prefer TP's funny satires, his somewhat darker mire serious works (generally still satirical) something in between or do you see his work as something else? Or do you hate all of it?
Heh. I consider the point of Discworld to be the playful way in which he combines parody and satire and through them creates a world that in its turn can create a new context for whatever he chooses to introduce into it.
12) have you seen any of the tv sealskins of his works? How do you think they compare to the novels?
The what? Sealskins?
