Kraken is much more fantasy-based than King Rat (which had far too many references to jungle music for my liking), and is quite geeky in places.
Mieville is generally never an easy read (the only exception being Un Lun Dun, a young adult book which is similar in concept to Gaiman's Neverwhere) but Kraken is much closer to "mainstream" than many of his other books.
Give it a go; I can loan it to you on Monday, if you're coming down to Leith for Tim's birthday drinks.
