Why particularly for Americans?

Because of the civil rights issue. Each country has its own injustices and ugly bits of history, of course, and a book as closely linked to such a topic as TKaM is to the civil rights struggle, is always going to be most relevant, obviously, to the people of that country.
It's a great series. If you like any of King's books you'd enjoy these.
