First and foremost, check the list of top 100 Free ebooks on Amazon. You'll find some great reads in there, and not just the classics Rebekah already mentioned.
Next, check out the link I posted to the Kindleboards. They have a constantly updated thread about the free books that are posted all over.
If you like science fiction and fantasy, Baen also has a free library with some great titles in it.
As for stuff I actually paid for, I love Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series (ongoing) as well as his finished Codex Alera books. I also bought Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings, and Dan Wells' I Am Not A Serial Killer and Mr. Monster. But the freebies are the vast bulk of my Kindle collection.
