Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson...Probably one of the most intense fantasies I've ever read. I like the plot, the many characters and the writing style. The second book was not nearly as good, yes I still enjoyed it, but it brought my rating of the series from about a nine to a six. the third book is redeeming it however.
The third book is fantastic and among my favourite ever fantasy books, but most people would rank The Deadhouse Gates not too far below. Interesting that you like it so much less than GotM... want to explain why?
