It's sad that I knew who this was about as soon as I saw the thread title.

Are there any objective accounts of what happened? The facts as represented at the link seem to fully vindicate an author I quite enjoy, but since they do so after literally portraying him as a modern day Luke Skywalker it's hard to treat them as reliable. I will say that from what I've seen of his online postings over the years Joel Rosenberg's VERY familiar with Minnesota gun laws, and here's the thing: Most cops have only a working rather than comprehensive knowledge of the laws they're required to enforce. I dare say NO ONE save God knows all the laws of most countries; that's part of why lawyers specialize as much as surgeons.
I've only been able to find two newspaper accounts of it though, and both mention a court order prohibiting firearms there. I know nothing more about such an order than that, but if state law exempts those with concealed carry permits who notify the sheriff it does not follow that municipalities can't still have their own laws prohibiting it. All the state law does is prevent prosecution under THAT law by exempting certain people in certain circumstances.
It could be an interesting case to follow, but it could also be a fight Rosenberg comes to regret picking. Whatever is or isn't going on with the local gang task force I'm not sure why anyone would need to bring a gun to pick up court documents about a case unless they wanted to post multiple mocking online videos. That doesn't mean it's OK to arrest someone for mocking the cops, but it looks at least POSSIBLE they simply declined to arrest him for violating a municipal court order but changed their minds when he chose to make a public issue of it. I'm aware of no TX law against fireworks, but if you set them off in almost any city (and most counties) you're breaking local laws and subject to prosecution by local authorities. I will tell you laws against guns at courthouses are quite common (in Austin, the state capital, county seat and a municipality in its own right, both courtrooms and the buildings housing them have metal detectors) because of a rash of people shooting judges when they didn't like verdicts a few years ago.
I hope everything works out OK for him, that ALL applicable laws read as he believes; otherwise I suspect it will be a very unfortunate confrontation.
