I purchased a Kindle 2 right before the Kindle 3's came out so I don't know much about the wi-fi only models.
(1) How easy is the Kindle to read in low light? If I'm a passenger on a road trip and the light is fading and/or inconsistent I'm going to want something that I can read pretty easily.
It's e-ink with no back light so it's just like reading a book in low light. No better, but no worse. This is actually a good thing because i've read plenty on lighted lcd screens like the ipad and they leave your eyes very strained after awhile. At least if you read several books a day! ;-)
They make lighted book covers but they can be pretty expensive. What I did was buy a cheap $10 case and then I got one of the mini mighty bright travel book lights for $10 and it works very well. At less then half the price it works great even if it isn't as seemless as the all in one setups.
(2) Is it worth the extra money to get the $189 one instead of the $139 one?
I've very much enjoyed the 3g model myself. It's come in handy several times when you decide to buy a book when your out of town and dont' have a wifi connection available. Plus you can use it to do some basic web surfing for free, which works well enough to check e-mail, read an article, or get a recipe.
But, if moneys tight I'm sure you could get by without it!
