A lot of the books mentioned are just popcorn entertainment sorts of books. It's like walking into the "Action" section at a movie rental place (or viewing it on Netflix). There are thousands of movies there but they all sort of seem the same after a while. On the other hand (to take the movie analogy farther), if you up a book like 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die and read through the descriptions of the movies, you'll probably find a good 20 movies at least that you really want to see and are worth seeing, and you'll likely get something worthwhile out of them.

The challenge of any information society is filtering the information and avoiding overload. You have to go from 250,000 cables dumped by Wikileaks to a five-page summary that someone made. You go from hundreds of books to a few.

Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius
