Hey Rafonauts

Hey

A few questions for you on your reading habits.

OK. Shoot

1 - Approximately how many books do you read in the average month?

I read between one and 25 books per month. This year I've been averaging about 3,500 pages per month of fiction in physical book form. So about 10-13 books per month.

2 - Of those books, what ratio would be Sci-fi/Fantasy compared with Not SFF? (Ie SFF:NotSFF)

In years gone by I'd say 80% SFF. Lately 10% SFF.

3 - (with credit to Tom) Which of these do you read:

Fantasy - yes

Sci-fi - prefer to fantasy

Historical Fiction- every now and then

Classics - one or two per year

Thrillers - yes

Crime/Mystery - a fair chunk of my reading is here

Other fiction stuff - romance novels are the majority of what I've been reading lately. That would fit here.

Non-fiction - a couple every year. Outliers was the most recent.

Graphic Novels - someone invariably lends me one or two every year and I love them. For some reason, I don't buy them though.

Manga - nope. I've only ever tried two though and hated them both.

Plays - about one a year.

Poetry - yes, but I don't really consider that reading a book. Pulling out a book of poetry and reading something that is only a dozen pages or so once a week can't really be called reading.

Short stories (please specify what genre they might belong to) - I often buy anthologies when I'm looking for a new book in a genre with which I'm unfamiliar. When I started reading romance, I bought a few anthologies to find authors I liked. Same with horror a few years ago. However, erotica collections are also in the list.

Magazines - yep

Newspapers - only the free alternative papers and the community paper. Otherwise I read all my news online.

4 - Do you read every day?

I'm sure I've missed a day or two this year, but for most purposes the answer is yes.

5 - Do you find it easy to discuss the books you read?

In person or online? I don't write particularly well. My often acerbic sense of humor does not translate well in print either. This curtails my lengthy discussions quite a bit. However, I talk books with friends and acquaintances on an almost daily basis. I recently started writing a quick blurb about each book I read on GoodReads.com when I finish a book. And finally, I belong to two separate book clubs that meet and eat monthly.

5a - If not, do you know what might make it easier?

Food. And booze. Booze always helps. (and more time I suppose)

6 - Do you buy books as soon as they are published?

If it is an established series that I've started and need to find out what happens, then yes. Otherwise, I'll wait for library/paperback/beg-borrow-steal from friends/secondhand bookstores/etc. But sometimes I'm just walking through a bookstore and something catches my fancy and I take it home with me. After spending the night together it goes into my pile of discards. If it was good, I'll think back fondly of our time together.

7 - What do you like to see in reviews?

I like to see a sentence or two of what the book is about. A couple sentences of what the reader did or did not like. Comparisons to other works. And finally, a recommendation and/or caveats. Of course if it is something up for discussion, it should probably be more in-depth. But for the most part something like the following is fine with me.

"I read BOOK X yesterday. BOOK X is the story of two young Vietnamese boys and their quest to be eight feet tall. The story follows them through twenty years worth of attempts and experiments across five continents and the edges of space. At first I thought the book was a farce and found myself laughing out loud at a couple of the situations (having a vet inject Bovine Growth Hormone into the testes was especially funny at first). However, after reading the jacket blurb and looking up some info online, I realized this was a journal kept by one of the brothers and not a work of fiction. After that I couldn't take the humor. These have got to be the stupidest brothers on earth. I really can't recommend this book. Reading this is like reading descriptions of America's Funniest Home Movies - Crotch Shot Episodes with the description of the actual damage done in each and every one of the impacts. Funny for a moment. Cringe inducing and sad from there on out."

Thanks.
