The two Stuarts. MacBride and Neville. One Scots. One Irish.
MacBride writes police procedurals set in Aberdeen. Deals with all the nasties and some you had not thought about. Mrs. Druid loves them, just glosses over the gory bits. Seeing that one book called "Flesh House" deals with serial cannibalism, there are a number of gory bits. BUT. The story, the setting, the writing is everything.
For hard-core gore-lovers, MacBride also writes as Stuart M. MacBride. One book so far. Called Halfhead. Gory police procedural set some time in the future. Great vision. Great story. I have not given this to Mrs. Druid as she would not accept to read something set in the near future.
And then there is Stuart Neville. First book called "The Twelve" and also known as "The Ghosts of Belfast". Great plot. Teaches readers a lot about the Northern Ireland conflict too. Second book is called "Collusion". I am still trying to find it.
Yes. I have been unfaithful to sf/f. Drifted over to crime when the genre became too derivative, otherwise known as "after Erikson everything else is crap".
And did I mention that if you have not read "The Power of the Dog" by Don Winslow you have not lived?
