It should be said: the words you don't know in Dutch are in all probability the words you won't know in Italian either. Difficult words are difficult across language barriers. I don't think Eco would be much worse to read than someone else.

The words I don't even know in Dutch are not the words I worry about, agreed, nor are they the words I'd bother looking up. But when I made that remark, you know, it was just an indication of how enormous Eco's vocabulary is. And I do think that'd mean I'd have to look up more words than with many other writers. And since reading any book in Italian, considering I never actively studied that language, would be very slow-going what with needing to use a dictionary for many words, I'll pick a relatively easy book if I ever decide to do it. Seems rather logical to me.
