I usually read sci-fi and fantasy. It's been years since I stepped out of that comfort zone. I want to try it because my friend recommended it and he also reads sci-fi and fantasy. I just don't think that a Depression Era story will keep my attention. Is it worth the try? I know it's a freakin' classic and I'm like the last person on Earth to read it.
Grapes of Wrath is not really the same. I really like his other works a lot more. None of them are upbeat, of course, so if that's what you're expecting, Steinbeck is not for you.
My friend's sister let me borrow The Grapes of Wrath. It's not my niche.

I mentioned it as one of the books I hate, so I'm not exactly unbiased.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon as well. I would go for something else instead. *NM*

Have you read any of Steinbeck's other stuff?
