I didn't take the comparison as far, but the gate thing did remind me of Moria, yes. (DH spoilers)
Legolas Send a noteboard - 05/11/2010 10:03:16 PM
Am I the only one seeing a reference, or a counterimitation of sorts, to Moria here? Dumbledore opening the gate, pondering it, finding it laughably simple (although in very different ways to the Tolkien version); then the connection to fire, and then death (falling). It does not follow it as a pattern, but there are some similarities that struck me there. Of course, Dumbledore actually dies, never to return. And the similarities accentuate the difference, I think. Still, I thought it worth mentioning.
The way it's invisible until you do the right thing and then suddenly it lits up, but then you still have to figure out how to get in. The rest... the fire thing feels like a bit of a stretch to me, but the falling, yes, agreed. In both books it's the mentor figure showing just how important he is once more - and then falling to leave the mission in the hands of someone unprepared for it, but not incapable of it. And Dumbledore will return, in a fashion...
Good magic not being flashy is of course also a Tolkien thing. But Dumbledore can be plenty flashy when he wants to be, as we've seen before.
