He wrote some nice, witty short stories earlier on, in the style of O. Henry. Some of his later stories are good, as well - I particularly enjoyed Dushechka and The Lady with the Dog. However, some of his stories are just overly maudlin, in my opinion, and his plays are just...well...boring and uninspired. For that reason, they're perfect material for hundreds of mediocre theatres around the world that have little to offer in terms of talent or innovation.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
