Re: Ron, Neville, Harry, Hermione, McGonagall, Professor Tofty, Snape, Umbridge and the second trio.

Ron: His bragging by the water. I like how it redeems James by showing it as an endearing trait rather than deep seated and unpleasant arrogance.
Yeah, and Harry mentions the similarity as if that was still necessary after Ron doing the thing with his hair.
Indeed.
Neville: I really, really, REALLY wish the trio would just tell Neville they admire his parents.
I'm not sure that's really the most helpful thing to say...
I don't know. I keep getting the feeling that Neville is unsure about how the others reacted to his parents. I don't think he is ashamed of them, but I think he is worried that others will find them somehow lessened by their madness.
Hermione's description of him as having a thing for saving people is very apt. I don't remember whether that is something we have discussed. She is quite right: it has been building throughout the books (book 2: Ginny; book 3: Ron; book 4: everyone in the pond; book 5…). I wonder whether it is due to some trauma related to the loss of his parents.
As you say, it builds. In this case, no doubt Cedric plays a role somehow as well.
Probably.
Hermione: I sympathise entirely with her bad temper during exams. Exams can do that. Especially when you are completely unable to evaluate your own work.
I was always the more relaxed kind of exam-taker, but I must admit in having been guilty on many occasions of Hermione's annoying discussion afterwards of every question. Not with the same vehemence, though.
Oh, definitely.
I am also impressed with her manipulation of Umbridge later on.
I'm really not. I found it ridiculous, actually - the way Umbridge bought it, mainly. She IS an adult and qualified Ministry official after all, as she points out to Malfoy himself; you'd think she wouldn't be as naive and simplistic in her thinking as the teenagers, what with their "secret weapon" nonsense. And the way Hermione keeps her from bringing Malfoy and company is even more ridiculous. A low point of the book, that whole thing.
I confess I may be blinded by my dislike for Umbridge here. Anything that sets her back makes me all full of endorphins, and my judgement may be impaired as a result.
I'd like to know how Ron and the Second Trio got access to their wands and escaped Malfoy and company, too...
Probably a spot of violence. I imagine Ginny was the instigator.
McGonagall: I like how she warns the students that while their results will reflect on Umbridge's rule, that is no reason not to do their best.
That was a great line, yeah.
I love the sigh.
I was so terrified she was dead after she was stunned the first time I read the book. There had been rumours that someone was going to die, and I was secretly hoping it would be Hagrid. In retrospect I wish it had been. At any rate, I like how she objects to the treatment of Hagrid at this point. I like that Rowling's good guys are not just "good", they act on it. They are not content to fight the good fight and tolerate whatever injustice might go on in the mean time. At least not always. I like how they may consider that the sensible way, and that they may caution Harry and tell him to not risk his neck, but that they themselves find that almost impossible to do.
It was rather unexpected indeed to have such an extreme reaction, though. No doubt McGonagall realized her intervention could have bad consequences for her, but surely she couldn't have expected what actually happened. I'm still kind of confused why that Ministry Auror - who iirc isn't evil or anything, and fights on the right side in later books - would join in such a criminal deed without any good reason - we don't even hear Umbridge order it or anything.
True.
Snape: I like how he refuses to give Umbridge Veritaserum. I assume he did not give her the real thing last time as well … it could have incriminated him as well as the rest of the order. I am sure he actually does have Veritaserum, however. His reaction to Harry's information is also spot on. It is his job to not show on his face what he thinks.
I'm not so sure he didn't give her the real thing last time, but I guess we'll never know.
It would not make any sense for a member of the Order to give her Veritaserum. Snape is good at the tactics of keeping secrets.
Love his comment to Goyle, too.
Yes.
Umbridge: the defining moment of her character is of course when she decides to use the Cruciatus Curse. "What Cornelius does not know will not hurt him" indeed. And you can see the sadist in her tipping the scales.
Agreed. That scene - and the revelation of her earlier deed - takes her from being a bad guy (okay, gal) on a Hogwarts-level to the real Dark Side, so to speak.
Yes. Although the torture of students has lifted her rather above the Hogwarts evil crowd, too. This takes it a step above that again.
The second trio: They show their true mettle. I love them. I think they have no idea what they are letting themselves in for. I think Ginny is partially spurred on by the memory of her famous siblings and their great exploits; I think Neville is doing it because of his parents; and I have no idea about Luna. Their argument that this is what the DA was for falls a little flat, as defending oneself against Voldemort is one thing, but actively seeking him out is quite another. But there is also a strong sense of doing the right thing. I like that the second trio consists of the less than conventionally heroic (although Ginny is only hampered by being a little sister, and not really hampered by that).
I think Luna's primary motivation is loneliness and the desire to feel accepted, but it's true it's hard to tell with her.
Harry's comment of how if he could pick three DA members, he'd have picked others is weird, too. Or rather, it's not weird so much as very wrong. We don't really know much about Luna's prowess except she can make a Patronus and does some mean Charms with those hats, but Neville has been depicted as very good, and Ginny's hexes have been praised by everyone for two books now. Perhaps getting the Twins instead would be better, but we don't actually know how good those are in combat, and same with the other older students. Harry has a long history of being unfair - inwardly, not in public - to Neville, and underestimates Ginny still because of her being Ron's little sister.
True.
