Re: The twins, the teachers, Cho, Snape, James Sirius, Wormtail, Lupin, Lily, Harry and McGonagall.
Camilla Send a noteboard - 05/10/2010 11:27:30 PM
Cho: I feel it is saying something that when Cho and Harry argue, I am on Harry's side. She really is quite astonishingly dim and irrational at times. I am glad Harry switches her in for a more sensible girl.
I disagree. As I've said before - and you agreed at the time - Cho seems like a cool girl who gets the short end of the stick from Rowling because of that awkward fling with Harry. All of her reactions make ample sense from her PoV, though - it's just the circumstances are so difficult that it was never really going to work.
You are probably right. I find I am easily seduced by Rowling's writing of characters. Cho, like Harry, has reasons for her actions, but they get on my nerves none the less.
Snape: Harry interprets him as the weak victim of strong bullies in the memory. I think that is a mistake. And not just because of the ``Harry is always wrong'' rule. First of all, we are given this out of context. It is one memory, which does not provide us with the story of earlier encounters. I feel fairly certain that there is a varied pattern there. I don't think they are picking on him because he is weak; quite the contrary, I think they are doing what the twins did to Dudley in an earlier book (although as I see it in a less problematic way): they are picking on him for being part of a group which picks on the weak -- for being associated with the dark arts. The particular comments may not be related to that, but they are the superstructure, not the motivation.
I think you're still biased by your fan-fic. Bullying is bullying, whatever excuses they offer for them. And as Harry notes, they start to bully him because they feel bored, not for any other reason. Of course Lupin and Sirius are right that it doesn't mean they are bad people, and it certainly doesn't mean Snape is an innocent victim, but it is what it is, and it isn't pretty, alright.
On this point I am fairly certain I am not biased from the Shoebox Project. I have held this position almost since the first time I read the book, and the Shoebox Project did not come my way till much, much later.
They are bored when they attack him, but it does not follow that they attack him because they are bored. That is Harry's interpretation only. It is based in James' comment that ``This'll liven you up, Padfoot'', but again, it does not follow that they turn on Snape for diversion, out of boredom. As I read the situation, this is a continuation of a series of attacks and counter-attacks.
The fact that Snape attacks James when his back is turned backs this up and serves as direct provocation for the more humiliating retaliation. Sirius' impedimenta spell merely held him down; Snape draws blood (to be fair, he is probably also spurred on by the proximity of Lily). His reaction to Lily's help (calling her a mudblood) is also somewhat explained by his embarrassment at this point, but it still speaks volumes about what he considers acceptable.
I'm not really happy with that part of the scene, in the light of the later revelations. Snape's calling her a mudblood strains credulity as it is, but it's Lily's reaction that is the most baffling. Is she really that much of a sphinx that she doesn't show the slightest sign of feeling hurt other than blinking, and merely insults him right back - borrowing James' insult, too?
I don't think Snape's insult is unrealistic. He is hanging around with future Death Eaters. It is bound to be part of the group vocabulary. He is embarrassed, upset, and he draws on that for retaliation. Love, certainly teenage love, does not mean glowing open adoration. It is a complex affair. That is actually one of the things I like about this scene: I think Rowling is fairly realistic in this.
Lily's reaction also makes sense to me. Blinking, when remarked on, is a narrative convention which suggests surprise or being taken aback by something. Like Snape, being hurt, she borrows someone else's words.
James: He is a little full of himself, and clearly approaching Lily in entirely the wrong way, but I don't think his comment to Lily that his motivation for mistreating Snape is merely ``because he exists'' is something to be taken at face value. I stick to my reading as I explained it above. James is arrogant, but he is not bad.
What is "bad"? Most bullies aren't "bad" in the sense you seem to mean it, and bully more out of boredom or to impress their friends than out of any real malice or cruelty. James is as "bad" as, say, Draco Malfoy. Fortunately, they both grow up.
In my world there is a marked difference between picking on someone because they are weak or powerless in some way (what Draco tends to do), and picking on someone because you object to their actions (like the twins do).
His comment that he wishes it were the full moon is more problematic, in a way, considering how horrible that is for Lupin. But it serves to establish him even more as someone who lives for daring adventures and danger. Possibly because everything is too easy -- he is not the least worried about his exams.
Yeah. That attitude must've made his time in Azkaban all the harsher in contrast.
True.
Lily: She is cool. I like both her standing up for Snape and her ultimate rejection of him.
As I said above, I find her reaction strange. I suppose we never really see enough of her to know her character, know whether she is indeed capable of perfectly concealing the hurt feelings she must have. Or perhaps it's just plot convenience here - if she had displayed a more logical reaction in the light of the later revelations, those revelations wouldn't have been as surprising.
See, I disagree. It works perfectly for me here. The first time I read it, I read her intervention simply as fair-mindedness, and then her reaction to Snape's retaliation as hurt that her help was rejected in such a rude way. Knowing what is revealed in book 7, I feel this scene opens up much more. Her objection to James and Sirius does not reflect as badly on them, and her being taken aback by Snape's words seem understated but all the more powerful. Like Lupin's reactions to Harry's mentioning his father during the Patronus lessons in book 3.
Harry: I like how he takes Snape's side in the memory. Especially as I don't. It is a side to his character that … I suppose it is what makes him the hero -- especially in Rowling's universe. It is interesting that he thinks that it would be acceptable to do it to Malfoy.
I think it has a lot to do with how the Marauders are still seeing everything as a lark and have had little reason to take things seriously, whereas Snape, like Harry, is more mature that way, forced by the circumstances. Most children do indeed do stupid things at fifteen that they are later ashamed of; Harry has been forced to be more mature, and has a hard time understanding such immaturity.
True.
I am a little annoyed that he does not think of the mirror when he is so desperate to talk to Sirius. Yes, I know I said it was part of a beautifully structured plot, but on the level of character it is a little unsatisfying.
He doesn't know about the mirror. The only thing he knows is Sirius' vague description of it, but he's immediately decided not to use it and so quite naturally doesn't remember it when thinking of ways to contact Sirius.
I know. I have been arguing that side with others in this thread. I agree. Despite this position, however, it nags at me a little.
His whole expedition really is problematic. As Hermione points out, Dumbledore's sacrifice would be in vain if he got caught. And he shows that he is aware that it would reflect very badly on McGonagall. Not to mention that this is not vital stuff. The only possible upshot will be to ease his mind. It is on par with running around risking his life in book 3 (before we knew Sirius was a good guy).
Agreed. I don't remember now whether his getting caught the next time has to do with having left traces this time, but it might be, so that makes it even worse.
I don't remember either.
