I was not that big a fan of The Ten Thousand, though that was primarily due to having a few too many ties to Xenophon and the Anabasis. (This is also one of the reasons that I don't like some of Kay's later work, the closer ties to actual history.) It's that history major reading fantasy novels based on historical events that I have spent a good deal of time studying thing.
However, Kearney is a very good writer/storyteller, and if this is only very loosely based on Alexander, then this might be a book that I will enjoy.

Is there a love story? I won't read it otherwise.

I don't get it. How can you criticize something for being the Anabasis?
