I've noticed much the same with To Kill a Mockingbird, actually. Most people my age I know who dislike the book didn't grew up in a rural Southern setting, while virtually all the people who love it did. Which isn't to say that non-Southerners can't appreciate it, of course, but for us Maudie Atkinson is the woman next door; Calpurnia is the black woman who was like our second mother.
