Harry: I feel quite sorry for him here. His paranoia is (for once) perfectly justifiable. It does take him rather beyond rationality in the beginning of the Christmas chapter, but he does bring up one good point: if Voldemort can see into his brain, he is getting way too much information on the Order.
Except that his theories about it are completely ludicrous. It sadly shows once again how badly he needs Hermione for any logical reasoning or thinking that doesn't involve what's standing right in front of him.
His self-involvement is really a little over the top, however. Can he really have forgotten that Voldemort possessed Ginny? It seems incredible.
Not really. Don't forget he's barely slept and eaten, has had those dreams while he did sleep, and is totally paranoid with all kinds of silly theories - perfectly natural to have forgotten that. I like how she puts him in his place and things in perspective with that "Lucky you", though.
Yes, I suppose this applies to the above as well. And while I agree he really does need Hermione, it is perhaps unfair of us to use this as an example.
The Twins: While what they say to Sirius is obviously very wrong, I like reading about their lashing out like that. It is so uncharacteristic of them, it is a clear sign of real emotional turmoil. And we are not really used to that from them. We did see it on the Quidditch pitch, but while a little out of proportion, their reaction there was perfectly justifiable. I like how they step out of line here.
Yeah. Ron's behaviour there is interesting too, though. Precisely because he's being so low-key - for him the worry about his father is mixed with what he's seen and heard from Harry. And Ginny's place as one of the "adults" is confirmed once more.
Definitely.
It is also interesting that it is Fred who says it. And later on, George goes with Ginny to embrace Molly, while Fred sits down and covers his face. It does harmonise with the pattern of a subtle distinction between the twins which we have seen before.
Oh good, I wasn't paying attention this time, good thing you were.

Phineas Nigellus: I really like him. Anyone who calls Harry in a temper tantrum a ``poor puffed-up popinjay'' gets points from me. And he is perfectly right, of course. Harry should know Dumbledore probably has his reasons for what he does.
I'm not quite sure whether we should assume his disobedience early on means he's really on the wrong side. Certainly he was in a rather Dark family, but does that mean he sympathizes with Voldemort?
Well, he calls him "The Dark Lord", but I doubt he is Evil. I think he just disapproves of Dumbledore's hippy ways.
Ginny: She is taking on the characteristics of Hermione to a certain extent. The savvy which Hermione has been developing over the last three books is also one of the main traits of Ginny. I am not complaining. It is also very much a defining characteristic of McGonnagall. I like Ginny's observation that Harry is stupid not to talk to her about the fear of being possessed by Voldemort.
I think it's just that Harry is finally starting to see the Ginny her brothers already knew. And so is the reader, because she's now part of the Second Trio. Which reminds me it's been a while since we've seen much of Luna, and that in turn reminds me I wanted to remark on her enchanted-lion-hat in the previous group of chapters. The first thought at reading that is of course "she's a bit out there", but then I realized something else: if it was easy to make such things, people wouldn't be so surprised by it. A subtle sign of her being quite skilled in at least one department.
Good point. There must be a reason why she is in Ravenclaw. She does fill the "eccentric professor" mould quite well. I don't remember whether we ever find out what she ends up doing as an adult. I hope it is academic.
Wow, did I ever go off-topic... oh well.
At least you stayed with the books.
Percy: He is such a bastard. It is quite shocking that his father almost dying did not shake him out of his insane ambition.
Keep in mind Dumbledore must've hushed the business up as much as he could. Percy may not have heard more than that his father had been wounded. As flimsy an excuse as that is.
Ah, good point. I saw that he had sent his sweater back and assumed they had told him that his father was in the hospital.
Ron: Giving Hermione perfume. I rest my briefcase.
Yes, this seems like a suggestion he actually knows he's in love with her, now... which makes it odd that he has to go out with someone else first in the next book.
Yes. Perhaps he is trying to suppress it so that he will not ruin friendship &c, &c? A position well known from oh so many American tv shows.
Neville: I feel so sorry for him. His grandmother is right, of course, and I wish Harry would have said something about them being heroes or some such, to indicate that he knew and that he did not think they were ridiculous in any way, before she rounded on Neville for supposedly being ashamed. I don't really think it is shame. I think it is pain. But I am not entirely sure. Perhaps it is a mixture.
I think Neville's never had a close friend and doesn't know how to confide such things in people - nor does he ever really get in a confidential tête-à-tête in which he could do so. Not shame, no.
Agreed.
Snape: He is so mean to Sirius here. It is perhaps the worst we see him -- even worse than the way he taunts the children, to my mind. Perhaps because it is so unjustified. He really drives home the point that you don't have to be a good guy to be a Good Guy.
I disagree, but then I don't share your adoration of Sirius.
Let's not forget that Sirius was one of those who bullied him for no good reason back in the day - which Sirius evidently hasn't forgotten either, as he uses the old insult again. Surely being mean against someone your own level whom you can't stand and who can't stand you doesn't compare to taunting and cruelly mocking children.

I disagree. It is not "no good reason". We get one scene taken out of context. From what Lupin (I think? Or is it Sirius? Possibly both) says later, it seems like they were reacting negatively to the Dark Arts, which I think is justifiable. And Snape was not friendless and alone. He travelled with the older crowd of Slytherin no-goods. You cannot use that scene as a basis for judgement on Sirius' character as a whole.
I think the reason why I find this particular moment of Snape cruelty worse is that he is kicking someone who is down, and there is no good that could possibly come of it. Sirius has not done anything wrong in being confined like he does, in fact he is following the orders of their commander. At least when Snape taunts the children you can almost read into it disappointment that they do not work harder, do better at his favourite subject. I know, I know. It is a flimsy reason, but I think it springs from my original hypothesis (when I read the books the first few times ... before book 7) that Snape's cruelty is not a sign of Evil, but a backhanded attempt at helping the good side. Keep in mind, this theory was formed before book 5, and was not really put aside until book 7. I had convinced myself that the reason why he lets Draco get away with nothing is because he has no interest in seeing him learn.
I wonder whether he gains some sympathy with Harry through seeing his memories of his childhood. Surely it must help undo the image he has created of him. And the question about the dog: it may be wishful thinking, but I am not reading it as an unfriendly question. Especially as it is followed up what from Snape is quite a compliment. It makes sense for him to test his natural ability to resist before giving him the tools … a sort of baseline. And he does immediately explain how to get better at it after that. I dislike what the films did with this bit. It became all taunts and no teaching, which is not what happens in the book at all.
No, he's perhaps nicer to Harry than he's ever been. I think in the speech about how Harry should control himself and not let his emotions control you, there's a lot of regret, a lot of having learned these lessons the hard way. Snape as a child wasn't so perfectly in control at all, and it led to him hurling that epithet at Lily which cost him her friendship and his hopes of more. Perhaps he feels his role in the Secret Keeper thing was because of him acting on emotion, as well.
Secret Keeper thing? I don't remember this.
Actually, now that I think of it... I'm paraphrasing because I still don't have the English version, but when he says "Fools who wallow in sad memories and are easily provoked - weak people, that is - stand no chance against him. He will effortlessly enter your mind, Potter!". Surely that is personal experience talking. He's been there, he's had it happen to him - God knows he had enough sad memories to wallow in which Voldemort could use against him. And then he gave in and became a Death Eater, until the shock of Lily's death brought him back and he spent the next fifteen years trying to become harder and a better Occlumens so he could move against Voldemort and keep him out of his mind next time. And feeling bitter about the weak man he used to be.
I agree.
It's no wonder he's nicer to Harry than he's ever been - he is trying to protect Lily's son from what he went through himself and what led ultimately to Lily's death.
It is interesting to read other reactions into the description of Snape at this point than the interpretations furnished by Harry. Snape's pallor and anger when Harry gives him his mother and father in the mirror, for example. I assume Snape had not expected to run into Lily in her son's memories.
Definitely. This fits exactly with what I wrote above.
Yes.
