These are all cool ideas! What about Brave New World AND The Island? (Or any dystopian/utopian contrast, it wouldn't have to be limited to Huxley.) Also agree on the sci-fi classics and the Victorian macabre. Have you guys ever run discussion groups across multiple boards?
- Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, which many people say is more realistic and relevant than 1984, for today's society
- Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, a classic of science fiction (in cooperation with the TV & Movies board, maybe?)
- a number of stories by Edgar Allan Poe, perhaps? Might be fun to discuss and compare various short stories, rather than a single book, and Poe is both immensely influential on various genres (horror, detective, speculative fiction in general) and a good writer, imho

To be a bit unconventional, I nominate Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. *NM*

Except Brit comic novels don't seem to lend themselves well to discussions *NM*

Well, I haven't read Dirk Gently yet (though I intend to). It's the principle of unconventionality..
