Before I started this approach, my list was easily this long still - I just realized that I was only reading the stuff I'd added most recently, and never getting around to the stuff I'd added a while back. This way I'll not be as tempted to "skip around." Well, okay, this way I'll just think harder about it before I skip around.

Here add The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway.

Fine.

You will love it.

Here, you should add Unspeakable Desolation Pouring Down from the Stars by Frank Key.

Fine!

This, too.

Philip Pullman ~ The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass
Really, you don't have to.

But I want to. Isn't that the point of this exercise?

Maybe. Just don't get your hopes up.

Ayn Rand ~ The Fountainhead
Seriously? Ayn Rand? You have a limited time on this planet, a billion books to read, and you have that on your list?

Yep. I've heard the bashing a million times, but I don't know what all the fuss is about, so I figure I'll at least give one book a shot. It's not like I'm planning on going through the whole catalog, here.

She is a nutty ideologue. Like Goodkind. Think it over.

Stanislaw Lem ~ Solaris
Oooh. You need to add His Master's Voice and The Perfect Vacuum and Cyberiad to this. You cannot skip some of his best work.

Oscar Wilde ~ The Picture of Dorian Gray
And, surely, all his plays?

For these two, and several others on the list, I want to get a taste of their writing style first. If I end up enjoying them, I will read more of their books.

The beauty of Lem is that his style changes. But it is always good and well thought-out. Most of Wilde is not as dark as Dorian Gray. More whimsy.

Dan Brown ~ Digital Fortress
You have to be joking. I repeat: limited tim &c.

See my response to jh at the top of the thread. This is the sort of thing I read for amusement value.

I don't get it. I don't feel amused when reading Dan Brown -- just vaguely insulted.
