I had a lot of minor food allergies growing up that didn't cause major reactions but would make me feel nauseous or cause my mouth to itch or something along those lines. As a result, I didn't eat well and didn't WANT to eat.
My mom read to me every day while I ate to get my mind off eating (and she gave me "safe" foods). I had my favorite books that I liked hearing over and over. By the time I was about 3 and a half, I had memorized what enough words looked like that I could pick up new books and read them myself, as well as sound out new words, so I started reading. And I've never let up since.

I disagree - while many SW books are lackluster, Zahn's are some of the worst. *NM*
