I don't think forcing books on kids is the way to get them to enjoy reading

I loved (and still love) reading almost anything, but there were books I hated to have to read because I found them childish or silly (I had a high reading level for my age since I read so much ) I would have preferred to have a list of books to choose from and read a certain amount of books instead of having a select few. While there were a few books I really enjoyed, many I just didn't like and had a hard time getting through, despite being a major reader.

Not many - they should be made to read, yes, but why not let them choose themselves?

Beverly Cleary should be good for that age. She did Mouse and the Motorcycle.
