August tally Aeryn Send a noteboard - 25/08/2010 03:41:12 PM
Read in August:

51. Susan Palwick - Shelter - 9/10
50. Robert J. Sawyer - WWW: Wake - 5.5/10
49. Ilona Andrews - Magic Burns - 7.5/10
48. Ilona Andrews - Magic Bites - 7/10
47. Cherie Priest - Boneshaker - 5/10
46. Vera Nazarian - After the Sundial - 7.5/10

Still reading Shelter (about 1/2 way through, although I'd cheated and read the last 100 pages already), the rating will probably only go up. What an amazing book.

WWW: Wake and Boneshaker were the Hugo 2010 nominee reads, and man, I really disliked both of them. Amateurish writing, poorly executed story. Wake was at least a faster read.

Ilona Andrews is urban fantasy that came highly recommended by Kristen of the fantasycafe.blogspot.com. She warned that the first 2 books are only average, but the 3rd and 4th get really good. So far, I agree. Magic Bites and Magic Burns were not annoying, although I don't care for urban fantasy at all. There were glimpses of interesting, darker stuff, like when Kate talks about coming home alone and bleeding.

Plan for August/September:

I'm in the mood for thoughtful books, preferrably scifi.

Paul Witcover - Tumbling After
Gregory Frost - Shadowbridge
Umberto Eco - The Name of the Rose
Robert Silverberg - Dying Inside
Elisabeth Vonarburg - Reluctant Voyagers
Jeff VanderMeer - City of Saints and Madmen

Ilona Andrews - Magic Strikes
