By having these awards so closely to the nominations period you are essentially excluding laypeople.
If it's my favorite author, yeah, I'll read their book in the year it comes out. But even then, probably not in the very same month.
Not to mention - we're talking hardcover release. People who wait for paperbacks will always be behind and just miss your dates cutoff.
