Yes. He has intelligence. Which is what makes the early choices and lack of questioning his parents so sad. He is one of the most interesting characters of the series because of it, though. You can see him striving for his father's approval, and I suppose that is one of the major reasons why he does not break with that rhetoric. I cannot help wondering what would have happened if he had talked with his own words in the show in Diagon Alley in the first book, had become friends with Harry instead of Crabbe and Goyle...

Indeed. I don't think his father would've let him, though - or his Slytherin housemates, for that matter. Then again, if Lily and Snape could do it...

Yes. Then again, if he had the bravery to stand up to his father, he might have been in Gryffindor.

Hmmm. Yes. Although that begs the question of how much of the grounds are covered by the non-apparition-protection. Walking from Hogsmede isn't really an option.

We learn that in book six, actually, when the Death Eaters escape from the school after Dumbledore's death. They run out the front door, across the lawn to the gates, and mere yards outside the gates they can Disapparate. It doesn't sound like a particularly long distance.

Huh. I was thinking about how Harry and Dumbledore only apparated to Hogsmeade on the way back from the cave.
