Since it seems nobody wants to publicize their choices, here's some of mine Larry Send a noteboard - 11/08/2010 07:50:12 PM
Hi Rafonauts

Read And Find Out has been open now for nearly a year (30 August) so it’s fitting that we hold our inaugural RAFO Book Awards.

Submit your nominations for the categories either in a reply post or via NB to Jacob, Legolas or Rebekah (or all three). Nominations close on Friday 20 August. There’ll then be a week for voting, and winners will be Announced on Monday 30 August.

The 3 books with the most submissions will be the ones you vote on.

The RAFO Year is defined as: 1 August 2009 to 31 July 2010

So get thinking, and get nominating!

RAFO Book Awards:

* Book of the RAFO Year

1. Jeff VanderMeer, Finch

2. A.S. Byatt, The Children's Book

3. Caitlín Kiernan, The Red Tree
* Best Fantasy

1. Jeff VanderMeer, Finch

2. Zoran Živkovi?, Escher's Loops

3. Michal Ajvaz, The Golden Age
* Best Sci-Fi

1. Caitlín Kiernan, The Red Tree (more horror than SF, though)

2. Cherie Priest, Boneshaker

3. Michal Ajvaz, The Other City
* Best Other Literature (basically, all the other genres)

1. A.S. Byatt, The Children's Book

2. Terrence Holt, In the Valley of the Kings (collection)

3. Paul Auster, Invisible
* Best Non-fiction

1. Stephen T. Asma, On Monsters: An Unnatural History of Our Worst Fears

2. Umberto Eco, The Infinity of Lists/The Vertigo of Lists

3. Mark Bould and China Miéville (eds.), Red Planets: Marxism and Science Fiction
* Best author blog/twitter

Are you wanting me to list my author friends here? I spend the most time at VanderMeer's Ecstatic Days blog, tease Mark Newton and Sam Sykes on Twitter, and browse through dozens of others any given day.

* Most anticipated book (as of yet unpublished)

Ann and Jeff VanderMeer (eds.), The Weird: A Compendium of Dark and Strange Fictions, in large part due to my first published translation appearing there.

RAFO SF/F MB Awards:

*Poster of the Year – as in the person who you feel contributes most across the board, in discussions, reviews, surveys, etc (not admins!).

Milli Vanilli

* Best Book Club discussion (this of course includes the Russian Book Club) – you might have to search a wee bit, but it’s not too bad! Look in the category “Book Club” for the official ones, and use the search term “Russian Book Club” for the other.

I liked how the Monte Cristo one turned out ;)

* Best book review – again, you might have to search a little. The two categories to look through are “Review” and “Reviews”

Milli Vanilli's reviews, again.

We might be nice and provide a post below with links to the various reviews and book clubs that have appeared over the year.

Obviously, this is the first time we've done this, so things might need a little bit of tweaking.

But it's really about a little bit of "fun" and getting involved, so don't worry too much!
Illusions fall like the husk of a fruit, one after another, and the fruit is experience. - Narrator, Sylvie
