It would have been even better, for me, if I hadn't guessed it half way through the book. I don't think that the ending was telegraphed so much that I just put together the pieces quickly.

It's like in the first novel of the series when you learn that the Hero, the guy whose journal we're reading at the chapter headings, was actually murdered by a member of his party, and replaced... and isn't the God-Emperor at all. The second book opens up that the "Hero's" mentor and announcer was behind this, and that the murder, jealous and power hungry that he was, ended up saving the world for a time. That's just good stuff.

The third book messes with the reader's perceptions as well.

But I read the book too fast to really think it through. And, as far as I remember, there were no clues or hints that there was a sentient being behind the Well of Ascension.

I don't know. There was so much going on at the end. The mistspirit had been a mysterious character all book long, who everyone but Vin believed to be dangerous, and then suddenly it appears and stabs Elend in the gut. Sazed is rushing to warn Vin, but is attacked by an apparently involuntary Marsh, and meanwhile Vin makes the extremely hard decision and saves the world rather than her husband, which turns out to be a very bad thing.

It was just awesome. Before that, the books had been good: intense, humorous at times, with some good characters and plot twists, not to mention the incredible magic system. But that was about it. The ending showed that almost everything the main characters had worked for and sacrificed had been so incredibly trivial. That was when I realized that this series was good.
