If I recall correctly, Elantris and the first Mistborn novel were by the book deals with TOR. I remember getting the PR letter TOR, prior to the WoT news, when they signed Brandon to a 4-book deal. I can't remember if that was to finish Mistborn, Warbreaker, and a futher work or if it started after Mistborn. Heck, I might even still have that in my Sanderson file.
Regardless, the relationship between TOR and Brandon Sanderson has evolved over the years. The more Sanderson's works sell, the higher profile he gets as a writer, the more and longer TOR has committed to him.
