Re: The Quidditch Cup, and anything else you want to discuss.
Legolas Send a noteboard - 03/08/2010 05:48:57 PM
I was always very annoyed that they cut Quidditch from the third movie. It always seemed to me that this was the one book where there was any point to the Quidditch storyline (I am wrong, of course -- they were less easy to excise in the earlier films) -- I cannot quite forgive them for taking away Wood's obsession and triumph.
Agreed. They made it even worse by cutting the World Cup Final from the fourth movie, although there at least it makes some sense as it would take the pace out of things. I think this is largely thanks to Cuaron not being so interested in it and wanting to focus more on the teenagers and their feelings... he's done some excellent stuff, including the aforementioned Slap, but yeah, it's a shame to lose the Quidditch.
The moment when Harry sends the patronus at Malfoy is highly satisfying. Compound joy in that the good are rewarded (victory) and the wicked punished.
Yeah, this is a short return to children's book land, I would say... the icing on the cake, making things as perfect for a short moment as at the end of book one with Dumbledore handing out those points (and, as Jonte argued, completely messing up the concept of the House Cup in the process).
As is Wood and McGonnagall's respective reactions to the final win.
Those are great, alright.
But the final paragraph of the chapter always makes me cringe. It is so off.
About the Dementors? I guess... she just wanted to make clear he was on a high, I suppose.
The Marauders' Map's replies to Snape are delightful. It must be based in the real Marauders' feelings, a reaction to his name based in memories from school? Would it have reacted like that to someone Lupin, James and Sirius did not know? If, say, Umbridge or Lockhart tried? It reminds me of Riddle's diary. The connection was made explicitly earlier, of course, when Harry remembered Mrs Weasley's comments on things thinking for themselves when you could not see where they kept their brains. It suggests the marauders have happened upon the same type of magic that Riddle used in creating the diary, which again suggests that the memory that Harry encounters is not down to the diary being a horcrux. I think.
As I recall Dumbledore's comments in book six, what is most Horcrux about the diary is that Riddle can project himself out of it. The communicating with him through the diary isn't so unusual, evidently, and I agree that the Marauders must've done something similar. The map definitely wouldn't have reacted like that to others.
Also, Snape must have recognised the nicknames. Why else would he have called Lupin. He therefore knows this is not a Zonko product. And that Lupin is lying to him.
Yeah, there are a few times in the books, including here, where you have to say Harry gets off strangely lightly when you expect Snape to throw the book at him. Perhaps Snape is afraid Dumbledore will overrule him if he can't genuinely prove Harry is guilty. Or perhaps he just isn't as much of an ass as he is in the classroom, where he uses his mean wit and unfair punishments to keep order and discipline (we've all had teachers like that, I'm sure).
