He probably just gave Snape the last clue he needed to figure it out for himself. Snape was already trying to follow them (the marauders) and he knew that Lupin disappeared every month. He's a quick guy, he would have figured it out pretty quickly. Plus he knew it wasn't James or Sirius so that left two choices if he only had it pinned down to their little group.


Yes, I just realised it is actually explained later in the book. I had forgotten where we got the whole story.
