Re: How much do you have to read to form an opinion?

When I tell people I read half the first book but found it to basically a run of the mill if somewhat long children’s book they tell me I have to keep reading it because it gets better. Half a book seemed sufficient to me form an opinion, I shouldn’t be forced to read a thousand pages of practice writing before I get to something worth reading. And for the all the talk about how many adult fans the series has must of the people I know who love the books starting reading them before they turned 20. The story may grow with the kids but I was already a grown up when it started.
The series as a whole is not brilliant or a genuine masterpiece, but I think it's fair to say it's very good. And yes, one reason why it's so good is the masterful way in which Rowling let the series grow with the readers. The first book is a children's book, better than average but nothing really spectacular, you're quite right.
I also certainly agree that the hype helped, it always does. But hypes also tend to have the opposite effect - that they lead other people to think disdainfully about the book or series without even having read it. Some people seem to think that a book or series hyped to such a degree can't ever be good. And that was what Tim was talking about.
Tolkien as a sacred cow of fantasy

That's my point, it's pretty much only relevant to Bella - only there is it shown prominently. *NM*

Of course, since she's the main character, it matters rather a lot, yes? *NM*

how many books do I have to read to get to the grown up books?

None of them are "geared towards grown ups" - it's still a YA series.

They're all "light reading" for adults, geared towards YA readers.
