I enjoyed all but the last ten pages of the first book

All of a sudden it got very prophetic and "chosen one" and I just wasn't ready for that. I felt a little silly liking all but the last ten pages of the book, but I recommended it to a friend and he said he felt the exact same way. Overall, great book, very cool concept, I just didn't need an epic quest.
Formerly Dark Prophecy, now I'm just me.

S.M Stirling, anyone?

The first one is on my to-read list. Unfortunately I'm still on F-G. *NM*
