you definitely don't need to try to understand all the layers and meanings that are meshed into the book in order to enjoy it. It's a great read just as a medieval murder mystery set in a mysterious monastary with a fantastic labyrinth, wrapped up in interesting theology, history, and philosophy.


My problem with books such as this is that I know there are much deeper elements/symbolism/etc that I don't understand so I get frustrated. It's why I can't read Gene Wolfe. :P
