Re: I agree Dark Knight Send a noteboard - 15/07/2010 05:44:41 AM
Do you like it? Does it fit with her universe?

All we saw in this book was swish and flick! Oh and the ever useful alhomora (sp?) The lack of magic fit well in this book as harry is just a beginner. Take for instance the duel Harry almost had with Draco. Ron said they couldn't do anything to each other because they weren't experienced at magic yet. You definitely see a progression from book one to seven.

Also, I find it kinda weird that untrained first years could bypass the magical protections around the sorcerer's stone. I know dumbledore explained that he knew harry would go after the stone but still...

I think the idea there was that powerful protection could not keep Voldemort out -- he has the most power. Therefore the protection must go in a different direction. Also, protective spells do not appear to be a great staple of the HP universe. I'm thinking of the locket protection in book 6, for example.

Dumbledore's protection on the stone was the most powerful. Voldemort would have never cracked it. Indeed, Dumbledore would later go on to tell Harry that very few wizards would have retrieved the stone like Harry did.

I think protection spells are a great staple in in this series. After all, the most powerful protection spell was the one Lily left on Harry when she sacrificed herself for him. This, I believe, is the single most important event in the entire series. It's the foundation, really. Also, Dumbledore uses that sacrifice to secure Harry's safety as long as he resides at Privet Dr.

The protection spells are really important to the story. Especially the more subtle ones like the spell on the stone and Harry's mother's spell.

And really the other spells on the stone had their own use. Voldemort really underestimated his opponets. He saw the other spells and was able to break through and thought "i'm so great they can't keep me out" and probably would never even think to look for the sly spell Dumbledore cast that would really keep him from getting it.

Even if Voldemort knew the spell Dumbledore used, he could still never get it. The only way to get the stone was the way Harry did. You had to want the stone and not use it. Voldemort would never be able to supress that desire.
