I read the first and the second book and then promptly gave up

I don't even recall much of them anymore. Filled with the usual dullness of King, and the later Gunslinger books are as thick as anything he writes. Yuck. Like a never-ending Crossroads of Twilight, or Don Quijote for those who don't read WoT.
There was a new character in the second book that I liked, though. Didn't make me keen enough to read the rest of the series.
Good luck, I guess

I almost quit after The Gunslinger but am glad I didn't. It really isn't representative of the rest. *NM*

Agreed. The Gunslinger, for better or worse, is very, very different from the rest.

Hm. That's almost enough to make me want to give it another shot.

I'd say you should at least give the second book 100-150 pages or so before giving up. *NM*
