In GotM Erikson hadn't yet found himself and it includes some incredibly stupid things, notably the dialogue like you point out. Eventually though, and really only after you've read the following books, you begin to appreciate the detail, characters, storyline and world-building more. I wonder if he'll rewrite it eventually, removing or changing some of the more blatant GotM-isms to make it easier for newbies to get into. I kinda doubt it though, MBotF isn't for really for the casual, easy reader.
