Or in some cases as the character fails to change and begins to bore me.
Does that become a fine line for characters to walk? I.e. between not changing and changing too much.
Or do you generally just tend to like characters that do develop / grow as a series / novel progresses, as long as they don't develop into anything unlikable?
If a character doesn't grow as a series progresses then I find they tend to become less likable. Assuming they don't change by going from being a nice guy to a character I wouldn't like.
So what I like is characters being changed in a good way by their experiences, how much doesn't worry me (as long as they don't become a completely different person over night just to suit the writer)
