"The Book of the New Sun" was incredibly boring, and I think if it doesn't interest you, may turn you off from his writing.
I picked up "The Knight" and "The Wizard" shortly before picking up "The Book of the New Sun", and I was glad that I ignored my colleague and went for those first, because I really liked the narrative style in those whereas the story in "BotNS" was boring.
