The general theme seems to be that it's better than MOSTLY HARMLESS (which would not be hard) but nowhere near as good as the first two. There is also the complaint that Colfer, whilst a good prose writer, is simply not as funny as Adams and his sense of humour is very different. Given that HITCH-HIKER works because of its offbeat humour, changing that seems to inherently be a bad idea.
Frankly, maybe Stephen Fry or one of the surviving Pythons could have given this a go, but no-one else was going to get close. The consensus seems to be that it is good for what it is, but nowhere near as good as what it is trying to be.
