Pale Fire by Nabakov. Or Lolita for that matter. *NM*

I finished Magician recently, and I'm looking for something else to read. Instead of raiding the book store and looking for something, I thought I'd ask which books you consider to be spectacular.
I'm not looking for a book that has any particular outstanding single characteristic such as a contrived plot, deep philosophy or detailed world-building. I'm looking for a book that destroyed your life for the time that you read it - because you couldn't put it down, and afterwards you put it down and went 'wow'.
Thanks!
Amazing books you think people must read

The main ones coming to mind are 1984, Possession and The Discovery of Heaven.

I enjoyed it. The absurdism--not all that unlike Vonnegut in many instances--made for a lot of fun.

I haven't read anything else of his. Just what he did with Clarke on that series.

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It's the July Book Club selection, too. *NM*

Pale Fire was excellent. Especially for people who enjoy when Frost is mocked.
