I can understand the character in the Overcoat completely. It's intriguing to see what happens when people are shaken out of the cocoon. Interesting tale.

The Nose was strange- I felt (before reading any other interpretation) it was about how people of a certain class expect their "due," or take certain elements of status for granted. And have no idea how to act when not treated that way.
