Interesting that Cronin embraces the description of THE PASSAGE as a vampire novel, as I wouldn't call his creatures vampires in either the traditional Bram Stoker or the new Stephanie Meyer sense. They're much closer to the creatures from I AM LEGEND and probably have more in common with the new zombie craze than anything else.
There is the blood, the hanging upside down, the sensitivity to light... this is sort of vampire like. It is much more similar to the newer type zombies, the so-call quick zombies, than traditional styled vampires. That said, the creatures do invoke aggressive bats, and that might be the connection in his mind.
The I AM LEGEND is a good comparison.
