I think there is a difference between belonging to a genre and being genre literature. Does that make sense? Ie, you can be easily recognisable as belonging to one without following its mainstream rules slavishly. Those that only follow convention, whose purpose is the genre, are genre literature, and usually shit. But that does not mean interesting books cannot belong to a genre.
