I had bought this book a long time ago when I was reading the Anne of Green Gables books and saw a quote that struck me. I googled the quote and found out that it was from The Mill on the Floss. Then a while later I saw the book at the used book store and bought it on a whim. Then it sat forgotten on a rarely looked at book shelf for a couple of years. I had forgotten I had it until the other day.

On another whim last night I picked it up and took it with me to read in bed. I had to slog through the first page before it started to show subtle signs of promise. The further I read into it the more I am convinced that this will be one of those books I treasure. I fancy that I see why L. M. Montgomery enjoyed it enough to quote.


or insulted that my basic knowledge base is being questioned.

Anyway. It's not as good as Middlemarch and frankly after the end I wanted to shoot myself. But I often want to do that, so I reread it instead.
