I think the woman is getting so much criticism here is BECAUSE she is ambitious.
No. You think wrong. Perhaps some of the other males are nervous about a woman's ambition, but I am not. If my wife does not have a job which makes money somewhere comparable to my own (even if she makes more, all the better) then well.. she won't be my wife.
Why sad? Her child did not suffer because she was working, she didn't suffer. She simply ignored the discomfort of labor and was able to concentrate on work. I would see that being a nice distraction from cramps. And one can't judge the quality of her work without seeing it first.
It's sad simply because this woman took one of the most special moments in her life (the eventual birth of her child) and turned it into a profit-making venture. She could have waited until the pregnancy was over. But perhaps you're right. I might just be sitting here chattering my teeth over the horrible possibilities of women asserting their power in the maternity ward.
It's really "damned if you do, damned if you don't." Women are discriminated against because they will get pregnant and take time off for family, but apparently trying to do both is an unspeakable crime as well.
You need to get off your hostile feminist horse and realize what she did is not very mature on her part, instead of seeing her as some sort of pioneer for women's lib.

We build a treehouse together.
